Circle hooks are gaining a great deal of popularity in a few different applications. The first area of renewed interest were the guys going for deep water rockfish. The hooks held onto prey far better, less fish came unbuttoned. Then the guys on the long range boats started using these products for tuna, big tuna. Surprisingly, the fish seemed to always hook themselves right in the corner of the jaw. The hooksets were better, fish didn’t come unbuttoned. Then the folks who specialize in catch and release got into the act. The benefit for this application lies again in the hookset. Always the fish seems to hook itself right in the corner of the mouth so there’s little damage to the fish once released. You don’t have to pop the hook to set it.
